Chapter 5: Where could it lead?

This is a preview of Chapter 5 (11 min) of STEM CELL REVOLUTIONS (71 min). Our educational packages come with all five dedicated chapters.

Science pushes our technological and ethical boundaries. Embryonic stem cells have raised ethical dilemmas, and the recent discovery of new technology for making stem cells from skin opens up new ethical questions. This new iPS technology produces stem cells that can make all the types of cells in the body. The discovery means that, in theory, it is possible to create a new human being from a piece of skin. But stem cell research holds the potential to tackle diseases previously believed incurable. Every breakthrough throws up new moral choices for religion, ethics and policy. And patients need protection from unscrupulous operators: regulations must balance science, safety and politics without limiting discoveries.
